Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to recreate a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following mastectomy. You will discuss the variety of options available to you with your plastic surgeon as well as the timing of the surgeries. The options for reconstruction are vast and include utilizing your own tissues, utilizing prosthetics and/or implants to help create a breast mound, or combinations of both. Breast reconstruction is a very personal experience and your plastic surgeon will tailor a unique plan based on your special needs and requests.
It is important to note that the reconstructed breast will not have the same sensation or feel of the breast it replaces and visible incisions will always be present on the reconstructed breast. Further, there may be incisions elsewhere on your body where tissue is taken to help recreate the breast. The recreated breast will not have a nipple initially. This will be recreated at a later time.
