Sunken cheeks are often a consequence of age. As we age the nor mal cheek pad descends and can assume a position that is less youthful. This can be corrected surgically with either an implant or with your own tissues. Alternatively one can use injectables as described later on this page. This is a surgical procedure used to build up a person's cheekbones and thus bring a more desired balance to the face. A relatively flat cheekbone area can be enhanced or made more prominent with the insertion of cheek implants. The implants may be inserted in conjunction with other procedures, such as a facelift, or they may be inserted as a separate procedure.
Procedure: Cheek implant surgery usually takes an hour or two. When cheek implants are being placed in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery, the implants may be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures. Otherwise, an incision will be made either inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid. A pocket is then formed and an implant is inserted.
Results: After surgery, a dressing will be applied to minimize discomfort and swelling. You should be aware that your ability to move your mouth and lips may be diminished temporarily and the sensation in your cheek may be altered. Stitches used to close the incisions inside your mouth will dissolve. External stitches will be removed in the office.
