Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction removes excess breast fat, breast tissue and skin to achieve a breast size more in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with large breasts. Breast reduction can usually help these problems as well as improve the size and shape of your breasts and elevate the nipple-areola complex.
Procedure: Breast reduction is usually performed through incisions on your breasts with surgical removal of the excess fat, breast tissue and skin. In some cases, excess fat may be removed through liposuction in conjunction with excision techniques or liposuction may be done alone. In most cases, a breast reduction will accomplish a breast lift as well. This is not the case if liposuction is used alone to accomplish your reduction.
Results: After surgery, your breasts are covered with a gauze dressing or elastic bandages. A drain may be placed for up to a week. During the initial recovery period, your breasts likely will feel very tender and sensitive. They may also be swollen and bruised. Over time, the swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. You may be able to return to work in two to three weeks if your job doesn't require strenuous activity. It may take several weeks for the pain and sensitivity to disappear. It may take several months for your final breast shape to become apparent.
