This procedure involves a combination of a Breast Explant and a Breast Lift, also known as a Mastopexy. The initial insertion of breast implants is a voluntary procedure, but for many reasons, an individual may opt to have them removed. Often, breast implant removal may be necessary. For example, in situations involving implant rupture, incomplete healing or infection. Depending on the situation, scar tissue around the original implant may be removed in addition to removing the breast implants.
The initial breast explantation procedure is immediately followed by the breast lift procedure, also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift may reduce this as well. There are a variety of skin incisions that can be used in mastopexy procedures. Your surgeon will discuss the options with you and formulate a unique plan tailored to your needs.
Procedure: It can take about 2 to 4 hours to perform the breast explant surgery followed by the lift procedure. Time requirements vary depending on the patient's unique caseExcess skin is surgically removed and the breast tissue may be lifted and sutured to raise the nipple-areola complex and tighten and support the breast tissue in its new shape.
Results: Most patients are able to return to work a week after a Breast Implant Removal surgery especially if the scar capsule is removed. You may have drains placed during surgery. These will be removed in the office. Recovery takes several days. Breast Implant Removal recovery involves moderate discomfort. Strenuous activity should be postponed until you are told you can by the doctor. In the initial postoperative period, bruising and swelling is anticipated. The shape of the breasts may be irregular. Breast shape may take a few months to fully refine and settle. Bruising and swelling subside over several weeks. Incision lines will continue to flatten and fade for up to 1 year.
